Wow, an interesting study that showed that weight loss is slower in people that are low in Vitamin D.

Main Points are:

Low levels of Vitamin D is associated with a reduced rate of Weight Loss

Vitamin D is found via fatty fish, eggs and mushrooms in the diet

Vitamin D is created in the skin with a few minutes of sun each day on the hands, face and arms.

Sometimes people benefit from a Vitamin D supplement.

If you are worried that despite doing all the right things for weight loss and you are still not getting results, it might be worth getting your Vitamin D Levels checked by your doctor.

Full Transcript Of Video:

[spoiler]

Doctor George: Hey there Guys,

I just wanted to share with you an interesting study that was emailed to me by one of my readers.

What it discussed is that when people are trying to lose weight it was found that if people had low levels of a particular vitamin they did not lose weight as quickly.

This is great for anyone that is trying to lose weight because if you have found that your work to lose weight has not been giving you the results you want, you may be able to increase the rate you lose fat but getting this vitamin back into the correct levels.

You might be doing absolutely everything correct but with a low level of this vitamin, all your efforts might not be getting the full effect they should be.

Could somethings as simple as a low level of Vitamin D be what is preventing you from the weight loss people are trying to achieve?

Now I have to preface this with the fact that this is only a very small study but it has certainly been of interest to a lot of people in the weight loss community.

The study was done at the University of Minnesota was that measured peoples Vitamin D level before they started on a low calorie diet.

In this study they saw that most of the participants were low in Vitamin D, but even more interesting was that the higher their Vitamin D level was, the more weight loss they had.

From this it is thought that if you have low levels of Vitamin D then it will be harder for you to have successful weight loss.

So what is Vitamin D and what does it do?

Vitamin D is a vitamin that is normally associated with the absorption of calcium and the formation of bone. If a member of your family has been diagnosed with something like osteoporosis it is likely that this is one of the tests that would have been done.

Vitamin D is formed though exposure of the skin to sunlight, or is eaten via vitamin D rich foods such as fatty fish, eggs or mushrooms.

In some countries they add vitamin D to some foods to help ensure people are getting enough.

If you live in a sunny place you only need a few minutes of sunlight to the hands face and arms to get your daily dose of Vitamin D. If where you live there are lower levels of sunlight it is noted that people will need a higher level of sunlight and they say up to 2 to three hours of sunlight over a week.

If you have been trying to lose weight but have not been having success it may be worth considering if you have enough Vitamin D in your body.

So what should I do?

Perhaps the first thing to do it so get your Vitamin D levels checked.

This is a very simple process of a blood test that can be organised by your family doctor.

If your vitamin D levels are in the normal range then you just need to keep up your daily sun exposure, or if that is not possible to ensure you are eating foods that are rich in Vitamin D.

If your levels are seen to be a little under normal many doctors will suggest increasing some fatty fish into your diet and ensuring you are getting a few minutes a day of sunshine to your face, arms and hands.

Very low levels of Vitamin D are sometimes difficult to rectify with just diet and sunlight alone. In cases like these you can benefit from taking a vitamin D supplement that are usually available in health food stores.

To recap, the best ways to increase your Vitamin D levels naturally is with sunshine in short doses to your hands arms and face on a daily basis, and to ensure that you are getting foods in your diet that are rich in Vitamin D. These are eggs, fatty fish like salmon and sardines, and also mushrooms which is the only diet source of vitamin D if you are a vegetarian.

Now the guys at the University of Minnesota are careful to say that this was only a small study and it did not go on to see if increasing peoples Vitamin D levels helped increase weight loss.

That being said, if you are keen to lose weight and finding it hard, getting this tested would be a great place to start.

In my next video I am going to be talking about some other tests you may want to consider that might be slowing down your weight loss efforts.

See you soon and have a great day.

You are kidding me right? A dumbbell that jiggles is going to help you lose weight?

I suppose the reason I have chosen to share this video with you is that apart from the fact that it makes me laugh I wanted to highlight the huge money that is being made by the weight loss industry.

So today’s newest weight loss device is a dumbbell with springs on the end that is able to capture “dynamic inertia”.

Sounds too good to be true? Hmmm why not ask the guys at Health & Fitness Advice who give it a glowing “do not buy” recommendation.

Every day new products are being introduced to the weight loss market that is already overflowing with expensive crap that is not only a waste of money but potentially dangerous and diverts people away from the absolutely simple changes that can make a huge difference in your life.

Between all the pills, powders, stupid ab blasting pieces of plastic crap hundreds of thousands of dollars are spent every day in promoting this shit to people who are frustrated, tired and desperate to learn the secret to weight loss.

With all this bad science being pushed is it all surprising that instead of getting strong lean and toned we are just getting ripped off, angry and

Sorry if I am coming across as pissed off but to be honest I am. I know what it’s like to be desparate to lose weight. I’ve tried the pills, I’ve tried the machines, I’ve tried the latests fashionable workout only to find myself in the same position a few weeks later, another purchase beyond it’s return for refund date, collecting dust in the corner.

Thinking about buying a shake weight? Dude, for the $29 they are going to charge you can get a skipping rope, and a set of free weights that are going to last but more importantly actually going to make a difference.

It’s time these rip off merchants were called on the crap that are dishing out!

Dr George

When it comes to weight loss for men there are many common misconceptions and old wives tales about the best way to get started. In this article we are going to look at three of the most common mistakes men make when they want to lose weight.

Men’s Weight Loss Mistake One: Not working on increasing muscle size.

Guys, your muscles are the key to burning fat. Think if your body like a car. If you have a V8 engine compared to a 4 cylinder engine you are going to burn more fuel. Burning more fuel means saying goodbye to body fat.

Get stuck into making your muscles that V8 engine! Here is a great post by a fellow Aussie on this very topic.

Men’s Weight Loss Mistake Two: Doing the wrong style of workouts.

Men have been taught the wrong information when it comes to weight loss. You don’t need to do hours of boring cardio. You don’t need to jog every day. By working hard and fast you are going to be able to crank up your metabolism and get the fat burning furnace running. Work on your big muscle groups, lift weights and short burst of intense cardio and you will be thin before you know it. Your body will have no choice.

Men’s Weight Loss Mistake Three: Not eating enough food!

Not eating enough? WTF?

Yes indeed, one of the biggest mistakes guys make when they are wanting to lose weight is that they stave themselves. This makes the body think that there is a famine going on and guess what happens, you body starts going crazy to conserve energy stores, i.e. fat!

To lose weight effectively you need to tell your body that food is plentiful. Eat a healthy varied diet, enjoy your food, let you body know that there is stacks of food around and there is no need to store energy for the hard times. This is a great info page on healthy eating.

Combine getting plenty of health food with exercise that increases your metabolism and you have a recipe for building lean strong muscle and burning fat at the same time.

So guys, if you want to lose the gut, look great naked and not kill yourself in the process, keep reading the updates. I’ll be sharing some of the best exercises to get that muscle moving in my next update!

Have a great day guys.

Dr George

Hey there Guys,

If you had to choose which would you prefer? I strong lean muscular build or a skinny bean pole figure?

Now yes I am being a little rough but when it comes to the exercise choices we make to get that body we seem to have it all wrong.

The good thing is that it’s not your fault! We are being constantly fed the standard line of:

If you want to lose weight you need to do long sessions of running, cycling or other cardio to get yourself into the “fat burning zone”

I too fell for this one.

Our bodies are incredible creatures, they hate stress. When you start regular long distance running, your muscle become more efficient, they become able to do more work with less muscle mass. Yep! Long distance running makes your muscles smaller not bigger!

If you start lifting weights, your muscles want to become more efficient, they get bigger so they can move the weight more easily…

Hmmm bigger muscles mean they are going to need more energy to work so they are going to need to use up some of the fat to keep the engine running.

It’s like comparing a V8 engine to a 4 cylinder car. The bigger engine is going to need more fuel. For guys wanting to loose weight we need to create an engine that is going to burn more fuel: fat!

Guys if you want to have a sexy muscular body, heck even if you just want to lose some of your belly fat, flatten your stomach and look a bit sexier in the mirror it’s getting those muscles working in a way that they have no choice to get bigger and burn more fuel.

There is a great post over @ Ryan Miller’s blog that explains this very well.

Next post I’ll share some great ways to get those muscles moving without having to buy expensive equipment, lug around heavy stuff or even join a gym.

Catch ya then.

Dr George

Wow! Australian dietitian Katrina Purcell has created quite a flurry of excitement in the news with release of her research that says that rapid weight loss, such as 1.5kg per week may be more effective then the standard “slow and steady” approach of 0.5kg or a pound a week in imperial.

When she says “effective” what “effective” actually means is the ability for patients to reach their ideal target weight. Please note that “effective” does not necessarily mean safe or even sustainable.

Heck if you want to have a rapid sustainable weight loss of say 20kg you can do that in an afternoon, just chop off a leg.

Ok I am saying that in jest but research like this always concerns me.

Evidence shows that with rapid weight loss is normally done so at the expense of water and muscle. You know that same muscle thas is the vital key to helping increase metabolism that burns fat!

Of course the other issues are that when such dramatic change is done to the diet it would need to be very carefully supervised, ideally in a hospital setting. This is sometimes done for people who need urgent surgery but their size is too big to risk an anesthetic.

Perhaps my biggest concern is that obesity really is a result of lifestyle. Therefor to be able to reduce weight safely it is really about looking at a lifestyle solution, not a quick fix.

By changing the lifestyle, in a gradual way that is not going to freak out the brain, an environment is created where weight loss is not only inevitable but also safe, sane and sustainable.

So yes, Katrina Purcell ‘s research may be useful and help shape weight loss for the future, but for the moment I will be keen to see just how much the participants of her study weigh in 6 months after it finishes.

Have a great weekend.

Dr George

Hey there Guys,

Got a beer belly or beer gut? Do you have a keg where you should have a six pack? Well guess what, I’m here today to help bust the myth of beer belly and help save this much maligned drink.

It’s very common belief that it’s beer that leads to the jiggly Santa belly. Well to that I say bullshit! Let’s get to the truth of where that belly has come from.

I still remember back in medical school listening to a fantastic doctor Professor Gary Egger who is considered the king of male weight loss in Australia.

His opening gambit was basically, you don’t need to stress about the calories in alcohol, just look at an alcoholic on the street they are not fat!

Perhaps a harsh call but the fact is that it’s true.

Not that alcohol is calorie free, let’s have a look, keep in mind that a can of coke has 139 calories.

One can of regular larger beer: 139 calories

One can of low carb beer: 110 calories

One can of low alcohol beer: 94 calories

And for the true gentlemen, one glass of red wine: 101 calories

Hmmm what does this mean…

Firstly is that most beers are pretty much the same, I think that low carb beer is a bit of a trend but really there is not that much of a difference when it comes to calories. Despite the belief that all the calories are in the alcohol, low alcohol beer is not much lower!

You see alcohol in itself will not make you gain weight, there is great page here that explains why.

So where is the gut coming from? Here is a hint…

One small packet of potato chips : 415 calories!

A small 30g (one ounce) packet of peanuts, 160 calories of which most are from fat! (you can look up for favorite snack here)

You see guys it’s the nut and chips you have with your beer, or perhaps that kebab on the way home from the bar. Alcohol decreases your ability to say no to the bad calories and usually you end out eating more then you would…

It’s not a beer belly, it’s a beer and chips belly!

So guys, here is the trick. Enjoy your beer, you don’t have to deprive yourself. You can drink in moderation, just be aware of what you are eating while you are enjoying your beer.

Who knows, perhaps the beer belly might just become a thing of the past!

Enjoy

Dr George
